Indoor drum line tarp design for West High Springline's 2010 show 'NUMB3R5' (featuring music from Dream Theatre's album 'Octavarium'.)

The original design sketch had a few of the numbers & shapes with an orange-to-yellow gradient. But given the time frame to paint the tarp, that aspect of the was discarded & substituted with just solid fills of the two colors just mentioned.

The background is solid black because:
1. It makes the other colors stand out the most.
2. It "covers up" any marching mistakes made or at least makes them less obvious.
--The Thinking/Idea: The drummers wore black shoes so it sort of blends in with the tarp pulling less attention to them because the feet don't stand out (contrast-wise). On the other hand if it were black shoes on white or a light color (or vice versa) the feet movement would be more noticeable & hence any mistakes made more noticeable.

The octagon maze IS actually solvable going from the outside to the center. It was done that way taking into consideration IF the judge (or even spectator) would try to solve it, they would, in the end, feel accomplished of their success & hence be in a good mood. (Judge in good mood = less likely to be critical of the show & dock a lot of points.)
